Description
Silver Embroidered Star from the Flag Decorating the Lincoln Funeral Rail Car. This large embroidered star on blue silk was one of thirty-six that was sewn to a flag that adorned the interior of one of the Lincoln funeral railroad cars during the duration of its stop in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 30, 1865. The seven-point star measures 2½" from point to point and is composed of silver metallic thread and silver sequins with a raised circular center. The relic is still attached to a 3½" x 3½" section of the original blue canton and nicely matted with a modern copy photo of the funeral cars themselves. After display inside the cars for the day, this flag and others made expressly for the visit were removed and presented to prominent families in the area. None of the other flags appear to have survived and only the canton and stars of this one, given to the James McQuillen family, remained in a much deteriorated state. A colorful artifact for the Lincoln enthusiast or Civil War collector.Auction Info
