Description

"Charge of the 54th Mass. (Col'd) July 18th 1863.....Storming Fort Wagner"

Rare, Pristine Condition, 1890 Kurz & Allison Lithograph. 19" x 27", archivally matted and presented in an attractive wood frame. This lithograph has the added interest of having been the personal property of the author of Roots, Alex Haley, and includes a certificate of authenticity. The image presented is truly dramatic, showing the 54th Mass., with bayonets fixed as they reach the parapets of Battery Wagner, with Col. Robert Gould Shaw, flanked by the regimental color bearer, atop the parapets, at the moment he is mortally wounded. The hand to hand fighting in the foreground is particularly intriguing as it depicts nearly every Confederate soldier with a huge Bowie knife. An important Civil War graphic image in exceptional condition.
