Description
US M1841 "Mississippi" Rifle, Robbins & Lawrence, with "W B 1861" deeply carved on the cheek side of the butt stock. In our experience markings such as these are characteristic of Confederate used weapons, with this specimen recently surfacing in South Carolina. Metal with deep dark untouched patina, just some light pitting at the breech. The breech plug tang has been extended to 4", clearly during the period of use, and now utilizes two screws. Markings excellent, mechanically fine, bore now about smooth. Another interesting detail often noticed on Confederate guns is a small aperture at the back of the lock which permits the oiling of the inside of the lock without removing it. V notch rear sight, the gun remains in the original 1848 configuration. All brass with light patina after it was obviously lightly cleaned a number of years ago. Wood shows honest hard use, including a burned out area behind the bolster, again typical of Confederate used weapons, but overall very good with nice dark patina, the carving absolutely authentic and of the period. The sling swivels are missing and the ramrod is a period replacement. A gun loaded with character that doubtless saw Confederate use, and especially desirable with this Mexican War date.Auction Info
