Description

Colt M1849 .31 Caliber Percussion Pocket Model Revolver Inscribed to Company D 74th New York Volunteer Infantry. Fine condition, #204945 matching, six shot, 6" barrel, two line Hartford address, manufactured very early 1863. The 74th New York ( 5th Excelsior Regiment) was mustered into service in Mid 1861. The regiment was heavily engaged during the Peninsula Campaign, suffering 143 casualties at the Battle of Williamsburg. Fighting through numerous other actions, including Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, the regiment found itself in the thick of the fighting at the Emmitsburg Road on the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettysburg, losing eighty-nine men. The regiment subsequently fought through The Wilderness and was mustered out before Petersburg in mid 1864. The 74th New York is numbered among the Civil War's "three hundred fighting regiments", losing 130 men killed and mortally wounded during their term of service.

The gun is generally smooth and clean with scattered traces of blue and case colors most notable on the lever. Sharp and crisp. The brass straps retain 80% of the original silver. Fine bore, excellent markings, mechanically perfect, the stage coach cylinder scene very crisp although the cylinder does exhibit some minor scattered dents. Grips excellent retaining most of the original varnish, just showing obvious wear/use at the bottom with one small chip. The gun is completely untouched. The gun is inscribed in period script on the underside of the grip strap, "'D' Co. 74th N. Y.", and, on the top of the backstrap where it joins the frame, with the numeral 15. Although the precise significance of this number is unknown, it is likely the regiment purchased a "block" of these guns and issued them to officers, thus explaining the secondary number. A very pretty Colt pocket, with a superb history, from one of the war's most heavily engaged regiments.
