Description

Civil War Document: United States Provost Marshal Confederate Parole, Signed by John Orthmann, 1865. One page, 9¾" x 8¼", July, 21, 1865, Galveston, Texas, numbered 563, partially printed. The oath commits Orthmann to "support, protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States". The document describes Orthmann as a forty year old merchant from Galveston, Texas, who stood 5 foot 2 inches, with dark hair and hazel eyes. What the document does not say is that he was a Prussian immigrant who arrived in Galveston in 1859 and died in 1867. Even toning with slight paper loss at the folds, else fine.
