Description

Brigadier General Samuel W. Crawford: Important Autograph Letter Signed and Dated November 16, 1863. 4 pages, 7¾" x 9¾" folio. Crawford was the surgeon on duty at Ft. Sumter during the Confederate bombardment, after which he changed careers and accepted a commission as a Major in the 13th U. S. Inf. Promoted to Brig. Gen. on April 25, 1862, Crawford commanded a brigade, seeing action at Cedar Mountain, and Antietam, where he was severely wounded. Unable to return until May of 1863, he was given command of the Pennsylvania Reserves Division. Crawford and his Division, part of the V Army Corps, arrived at Gettysburg on July 2, and were engaged on the slopes of Little Round Top. Crawford remained in command of the Pennsylvania Reserves for the rest of the war, and was promoted to Major General on August 1, 1864. He was again wounded at Weldon Railroad.

The letter, in bright, crisp, ink script, is on pre-printed "Headquarters Penna. Reserves" stationary, and headed "Camp at Mountain Penn November 16, 1863". Addressed to an unidentified, but clearly higher ranking, general, Crawford discusses the disposition and intentions of the army, "[Gen. Meade] is anxious to suddenly sieze the Fredericksburgh Heights, this would compel Lee to fall back below Richmond". Crawford further states, "I have never known the Army in such spirits. I have never seen it in such heart. Our men believe the enemy is afraid of them..." Crawford, at length, addresses the need to "retain veteran troops accustomed to meet the enemy" and requests his correspondent to "use your influence to accomplish this." On a personal note Crawford addresses his hoped for promotion, stating "I trust you will not forget to assist me in my promotion - I had supposed that 'Gettysburg' would have secured it but it has not yet been made." Great letter in pristine condition.
