Description

Ultra Rare Confederate Butternut Forage Cap. Here is a remarkable example of one of the most desirable pieces of Civil War headgear: a butternut CS forage cap. The body of this tall headwear rises a full 4" in the front and 5" in the rear. The brown body is made from woven light and darker natural dyed threads, giving it an overall light brown appearance. The base is trimmed in a thin black silk cord which rises to a peak in the front. The very interesting 5/8" wide chin strap is cut from a piece of beaverskin with an oilcloth treated underside, the finished side showing outward. There are two loops on the strap, which is made without a buckle. The strap is fastened to the sides by two U.S. general service "eagle" buttons as commonly seen on many Confederate pieces (buttons have a plain tinned iron back, see Tice GEN215, #57). The slender squared, bound visor has a thin black glazed finish on the top with a green glazed finish on the bottom. The original 1½" leather sweatband is in place as is the black/brown cotton body lining. The crown is lined with black silk, stitched to the top in a circular pattern and now missing much of its center. There is no indication that any insignia was ever affixed to the cap. The cap is sound and in overall fine condition, showing light wear with a few minor frayed sections and no moth damage. There are four very small sections of loss to the trim as well. The black trim is in keeping with uniforms worn by Louisiana and North Carolina troops, although an exact state affiliation can not be determined. A choice and exceedingly rare example of the common Confederate soldier's headgear.
