Veracruz Judge Seated on a BenchVeracruz

Modeled and painted ceramic

The figure wears a tall cone-shaped hat with chin strap. His face is painted solid black with asphaltum. Around his neck he wears four large spools wound with representations of round cords. These cords may have been used to take measurements during the ancient ballgame. "Out of bounds" was an important concept in the pre-Columbian ballgame known as Ulama. There are two large holes in the back of the figure, and one in the front of the bench. Some scholars have suggested that a person could have spoken into one of the holes in the back to make it appear that the figure, itself, was speaking. The fingers of the left hand of the figure have been restored. One corner of his loin cloth is missing.
