Veracruz Seated Figure with Facial Patches

Veracruz
Ça 600-900 AD
Modeled ceramic with added pigment

12¾" High x 7" Wide

The seated figure probably represents a deity impersonator. On his cheeks he wears patches of skin that appear to be soles of feet. His teeth have been filed so that only a single tooth appears in his open mouth. He wears a large square headdress and a necklace of bells. The figure is seated cross legged. He wears knotted straps, probably of leather below each knee.
