Description

Circular Gold Earrings with Spider Monkeys

Nariño
Ça 600-1500 AD
Lost wax cast gold

3¼" in diameter

The circular forms of these earrings enclose an openwork diagonal stepped pattern that resembles weaving. Five spider monkeys play along the outer edge of each earring. Each earring is perforated at the point where the sixth monkey would have stood. Perhaps a mischievous jeweler was suggesting that the wearer might be the sixth monkey. 39.3 grams, the pair.
