Description
Magnificent and Complete Bell Crown Shako. The bell crown or "tarbucket" helmet was first introduced into the U.S. Army in 1820 and the style soon caught the fancy of almost every militia unit in the country, staying in favor well through 1830s and beyond. Both for condition and decoration, this is an exceptional example of that impressive headgear. The black, coated leather body is still fully intact and pliable with all stitching tight. The interior is likewise in wonderful condition, with the thin leather sweatband showing a little chipping and appropriate wear and about 40% of the blue cloth liner remaining above it. On the front of the helmet is a massive brass sunburst measuring at least 5" in diameter. In the center is a detailed silver wreath inside of which is an elegant brass company letter "F" mounted on a piece of black leather. Above the front plate is a large brass shield measuring 2.5" x 3" on which is secured a copper symbol of the state of Massachusetts, an armored arm brandishing a scimitar. Fixed into the top of the helmet, behind that shield, is a small ball of red wool on which rests an impressive 7" long pompon of white worsted wool. The original brass chinstrap scales are in place, affixed by large brass buttons bearing a "flaming bomb" design. A set of white cords, attached to the hat by rings at the sides of the crown, complete the decoration. Only the cords may post-date the helmet itself. Seldom is the bell crown helmet found in such wonderful condition and so complete with the impressive trappings of the golden age of American militia companies.
