Description
Entirely Hand-Fabricated Southern Patriotic Banner, Believed to Be Early Civil War, or Possibly Pre-War. There is a blue border, 2.25" at the sides, 4.25" at the bottom and 1.5" at the top, of fine quality wool bunting. The top and bottom are rolled forming a 1.25" sleeve. The blue border appears to have been originally hand sewn and then reinforced with machine stitching. A 0.75" red border, also of fine quality wool bunting, surrounds the white cotton center section, which is decorated with hand painted red and blue scroll work around the edges, surrounding the blue, highlighted with red, painted motto, "God/ And our/ Country". The reverse of the banner exhibits more elaborate blue and red scroll work around the edges and exhibits prominent "shadows" where the 4.75" high block letters "S. N./ S. S." were once affixed, doubtless being the organization the banner represented. The blue border retains one, of what were apparently twenty-four (possibly twenty-five), 1", five-pointed stars, glued to the banner. Overall excellent condition with just some minor scattered damp staining and a few scattered tears with old tape repairs, none exhibiting any loss. Overall very sound. A fascinating patriotic banner, doubtless dating to the Civil War period or earlier.Auction Info
