Description

Civil War: Original Pencil Drawing by Augustus Kollner of Two Members of the German Rifles, a Philadelphia Schutzen Rifle Unit. The drawing is by Augustus Kollner, a German-born artist who moved to Philadelphia in 1840, where he made a living with a small lithography shop, but indulged his passion for drawing and painting. He worked for Huddy and Duval's U. S. Military Magazine. In July 1863 Kollner joined the Union Army for a three-month enlistment as a private in "Hummell's" Company, Pennsylvania Independent Cavalry and was mustered out three months later. For the duration of the war Kollner concentrated on military subjects for his art. This drawing shows an officer or a non-commissioned officer with a drawn sword. Standing next to him is an enlisted man leaning on a rifle. The non-regulation uniform suggests a German irregular rifle unit. The drawing is 9.5" x 9.5". The left edge shows signs of being excised from a journal. Signed in lower right "A.K. Aug. 25, 1864". Very fine.
