Description
Unusually Nice Quality, Pristine Condition, Unmarked Confederate Enlisted Cavalry Saber We Believe to Be The Work of Louis Haiman, Columbus Ga. 35" curved blade near perfect. Unstopped fuller that runs to within 1 1/2" of the hilt and 7" of the tip. Exceptionally fine, untouched condition. Just a smooth light gray patina, with absolutely no rust or pitting and a few very minor edge nicks toward the tip, along with some very light scratches in the same area, all of really negligible consequence. Blade also exhibits a couple of visible forging flaws. The underside of the guard is smooth and distinctive concave. The slightly rounded quillon exhibits the small die stamped number "95", with the same number appearing on the side of the pommel cap. Guard with the edges of the branches rather roughly finished, i.e. casting line still visible on the outboard branch , but perfect untouched condition with dark untouched patina. The oilskin covered grip with tight twisted brass wire wrap is mint. Scabbard really excellent with wide , heavy iron throat riveted in place. Rather slender nicely finished brass ring mounts with iron carrying rings, one slightly larger than the other but clearly period. Scabbard overall with smooth dark brown patina and just a few minor scattered tiny dents along the front edge. Obviously period, and of no noteworthy consequence. The iron drag is marked with the numeral "0". An exceptionally nice sword and with little question the work of Haiman. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.Auction Info
