Description

Great American Paint Decorated Eagle Drum with Unit ID. 17 1/4" high, 15 1/4" diameter. The heads, ropes and tighteners have been professionally restored, and superbly done, although the snares appear to be original. Beautifully decorated with American shield in the center, which is surmounted by American eagle head/neck, the eagle holding a blue riband with motto. The riband is decorated with gilt and red along the edges and terminates in extensive gilt scroll work with additional scroll work along the bottom edge of the riband. The American shield is enclosed within a wreath of laurel leaves and the shield displays 9 six pointed stars. A 1 3/8" riband extending across the entire front of the drum, edged in black and red, with gilt block letters on a green background "RANDOLPH LIGHT INFANTRY". The riband terminates in elegant gilt scroll work and displays laurel leaf decoration beneath. Paint overall with wonderful untouched patina and just a few dents on the shield resulting in the loss of a few minor flakes, else 100% intact and very sound. There is no label. A few chips on the top hoop, obviously the result of honest use. The very thick (3/16") seam on the body of the drum, as well as its height, would certainly indicate it substantially pre dates the Civil War. Although it has never been firmly established the drum probably has its origins in Randolph, Mass. A beautiful American drum representing a superb piece of American folk art as well as a most desirable American military artifact.
