Silver Match Safe Inscribed to Col. Walton Dwight 149th Pa. Vol. Inf. Marked "STERLING" on the lip under the lid and inscribed on the front "Col. Walton Dwight / Binghamton, N. Y." and quite possibly slightly post war. 2 5/8" X 1 1/8" X 3/8" thick with flip open lid. Dwight enlisted in the 149th as a Captain on 8/27/62 and was promptly promoted to Lt. Col. on 8/29/62. He served with the 149th, the 2nd Bucktails, through heavy fighting at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, where he was wounded on July 1 with a gunshot wound to the upper thigh. The regiment lost a total of 336 men killed, wounded, and missing during the three horrific days at Gettysburg. Dwight resigned on 3/31/64 doubtless as a result of his wounds. A nicely inscribed. and attractive, artifact from a gallant officer from a great regiment.
