Description

French Captain's Kepi of the 128th Infantry Regiment, Circa Pre-WWI. A lovely example of a Saumur pattern officer's kepi featuring a high red wool crown topped with a polo pattern knot, captain's gilt rank braid and "128" embroidered in gold wire directly onto the black wool band. A ½" wide gold chinstrap is secured to the kepi by two small gilt buttons adorned with the flaming grenade insignia of the French infantry. The kepi is lined in gold silk and retains the original leather sweatband. No size or maker's marks are present. The kepi is in very good condition with a few small moth nips, some fraying to the silk interior, and moderate crazing to the fiber bill. This hat was featured on page 121 of Exotische: French Kepis of the Twentieth Century printed by the Wilson History & Research Center, 2012.
