Description

Two Civil War Period or Earlier Surgeon's Tenon Saws. First example 15 3/4" overall with brass reinforcing rib along top of blade and handle attached using two brass screws with brass backing plate. 5 1/4" ebony pistol grip style handle with thumbhole. Blade with nice smooth dark patina overall. Handle shows honest smooth wear with minor hairlines at the screws. Scarce form and a nice example completely unmarked. The second is probably C. 1830, 13 1/2" overall.
Marked Chester London on the face of the top rib. One piece ebony grip with decorative cut at the bottom. The saw incorporates a unique detail with a knurled screw that, when removed , allows the handle to be folded underneath the blade for storage or easier transport. Ebony grip excellent, just one small chip at the bottom corner. metal generally smooth and gray with just some very minor scattered very light pitting. Very unusual and the first example we've encountered.
