Description
US M1864 Light Artillery Shako Horstmann Contract of 1866 with Original Red Suspensory Cord. Pure regulation form as designed in 1864 for use by light artillery batteries. The body, which is 5 1/2" high at the front, consists of blue wool over a pasteboard shell. As per regulation, the top is covered with "stiff glazed leather, of best quality, extending over the body 3/4 of an inch....depressed in the crown 5/16". with a band of "thin glazed leather" one inch encircling the base. Retains the original chinstrap with brass adjusting buckle and general service side buttons, along with the distinctive wide visor firmly stitched on the front, both in excellent condition. Retains, inside the full "sweat leather of black morocco" and the original contractor's label printed on a circular piece of paper, "Horstmann Bros. & Co. / Manufacturers of / Military Goods / Fifth and Cherry Sts. / Philadelphia", with size number 4. The blue wool body covering has sustained about 40% moth damage. Interestingly when the large majority of these shakos were discovered warehoused, many years ago, nearly all of them had the blue wool covering completely missing as a result of moth damage, and finding an unrestored example with this much of the original wool remaining is actually somewhat unusual, with most of the examples that appear on the market today having been completely recovered. Although detached, it retains the complete original woven red wool suspensory cord with the original 3" nozzle like brass finial. In itself quite scarce. A very scarce piece of regulation US headgear and certainly a prime candidate for restoration.Auction Info
