Description

Gemini 3 Flown MS63 NGC Gold over Sterling Silver Fliteline Medallion Directly From The Armstrong Family Collection™, Certified and Encapsulated by Collectibles Authentication Guaranty.' This 26mm medal flew on America's first two-man space mission, March 23, 1965, along with Gus Grissom and John Young. The obverse features the mission insignia of a space capsule floating in the water with "The Molly Brown" and the crew's full names above and below. The reverse has a struck "GT-3" and an engraved mission date along with the sterling hallmark. Grissom named the flight after the Broadway play, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, a lighthearted reference to his first spacecraft Liberty Bell 7, which sank after splashdown. NASA was not happy with the name, but relented and this was the last Gemini flight the astronauts were allowed to name. As a member of the astronaut office, Armstrong was allowed to purchase this medal. A Select Uncirculated example of the first of the Fliteline medals. This lot will include a Statement of Provenance signed by Neil Armstrong's sons, Rick and Mark.
