Description
H. Albright Signed Kentucky Flintlock Rifle. Very fine flintlock full stock Pennsylvania rifle signed by master gunsmith Henry Albright. C. 1795 - 1800. 44" full octagonal barrel, approximately .57 caliber. Barrel signed "H. Albright" in script on the top flat of the barrel. Albright began his career in Lancaster County C. 1790, as is evidenced by the iconic daisy finial patchbox used on this rifle. Albright almost qualifies as an itinerant gunsmith in the succeeding 20 years, moving to Chambers, Pa., Shippensburg, Pa., Ohio and finally back to Nazareth, Pa. where he died in 1816. It is likely Albright produced rifles displaying characteristics of the Lancaster school throughout his career. The daisy finial patchbox is classically Lancaster in form, and exhibits finely engraved details typical of Albrights work. The lock, which appears to be in original flintlock configuration, is decoratively engraved. The full stock is fabricated of fine curly maple and exhibits a dark untouched patina overall. The rather short cheek piece is highlighted by a carved panel below and very delicate, tendril like relief carving to the rear. Overall condition is superb with no obvious restoration. Barrel generally smooth and gray with just a few small areas of light pitting. Wood with nice rich patina and just showing honest wear and use with a few minor hairlines, minor repair to left side of forearm near last ramrod band, in no way affecting soundness. Missing one buttplate screw. An exceptionally nice example of a rifle by one of Pennsylvania's finest and best known gunsmiths.Auction Info
