Description

Fantastic Diorama Capturing the Aerial Combat of the Ploesti Bombing Raid. This incredibly detailed diorama was built by artist Robert L. Conely. It measures 40" x 20" x 22.5" and captures in minute detail one of the oil refineries at Ploesti as it comes under attack by two B-24 Liberator four-engine bombers. The refinery buildings, brick smokestacks, storage tanks and rail yard are artistically rendered. The refinery's defenders can be seen manning anti-aircraft guns and shooting at the American bombers. This is an impressive tableau and certainly of museum quality. The attack on the Ploesti oil fields was code named Operation Tidal Wave. The attack was carried out by B-24 on August 1, 1943. The mission resulted in the worst loss ever suffered by the U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater with 53 aircraft and 660 crew members lost. The date was later referred as "Black Sunday", and sadly caused no great curtailment in Romanian oil production capabilities.
