Ancient Beer Jug

ISRAELITE. Iron Age II, circa 1000-586 BCE. Terracotta beer container. A squat juglet, 5.15 inches (13 cm) in height, with bulbous body, elongated neck and handle for dipping and flattened foot. On the side of the vessel, a short spout with piercings in the pot for straining. Beer dredges found inside the vessel. Cf. Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land (Amiran, R.), P. 253, no. 10. Extremely rare example of this unusual type with remains of the original beer still in the vessel. Published in Biblical Archaeology Review, November - December 2004, p. 49.
