Description

Varina Davis: Enamel Miniature on Copper. 2" x 2.5" miniature portrait of the "Daughter of the Confederacy", Varina Anne Davis, affectionately known as Winnie. She died at the age of 34 in 1898, but was beloved for her unstinting work on behalf of Confederate veterans. It is inscribed on the back side by the artist: "Mathieu Deroche/ Paris/ [illeg] en Capucines/ 39/ Me [daille] D'Or 1878 1889/ ND". It is also signed on the front. A very pleasing portrait by a very accomplished artist. Currently housed in a Shreve & Co. jewelry case.
