Description

ANCIENT NEAR EAST. Iron Age II, circa 925-568 BC. Bronze votive lion figurine. The impressively solid feline stands 2.2 inches (5.6 cm) high and is 2.25 inches (5.715 inches) long, his feet on a split integral rectangular base, the head massive, with a mouth partially open to display fangs and teeth, his main defined by swirls in low relief on his neck and shoulders. Dark green patina with areas of reddish cuprite and earthen deposits. Cf. Animals In Ancient Art from the Leo Mildenberg Collection (Cleveland Museum, 1981), page 36, 22 (solid cast lion finial, described as East Greek or Anatolian, 7th century BC").
