Description

CANAANITE - CYPRIOT. Late bronze age, circa 1550-1200 BCE. Terracotta zoomorphic askos. Of bulbous form, 7.5 inches (19 cm) tall on narrow flattened base, with a flared filling spout above a vestigial tail, carrying handle and ram's head spout. Intact, with light earthen encrustation overall. Reportedly found circa 1970 in Israel (and offered here) together with a small one-handled terracotta juglet, 4.5 inches (11 cm) tall; intact, with similar encrustation. Cf. British Museum Collection 1982,0726.9 for a similar zoomorphic askos, described as Cypriot.

From the Hadji Baba Museum Collection, Old City Jerusalem. IAA Export Approval #531039.

A thriving trade existed in the Bronze Age between the Canaanite coast and Cyprus, and the distinct similarity of pottery forms points to a common source for much of the material found there.
