Description

CANAANITE. Middle Bronze Age, circa 1950-1539 BCE. Bronze "duck-bill" axe head. Composed of a triangular or beak-shaped blade 3.75 inches (9.6 cm) in length and 1.65 inches (4.6 cm) wide, with two oval piercings and a socketed section which originally held the wooden axe handle. Intact, with minimal surface erosion and an attractive dark green-brown patina. See British Museum Collection, item no. 126978, acquired in Beirut, 1937.

From a California collection, purchased from Malter Galleries, 1990s.

This form of axe head was ubiquitous across the Near East in the Middle Bronze Age, being found between Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Anatolia and all cultures between.
