The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Two Rare Early Arizona Territory Bank Drafts, One Drawn by Endicott Peabody. Two rare 1882 bank drafts. 1) A Safford, Hudson & Company, Bankers draft, 6 5/8" x 2 6/8", unnumbered, dated May 3, 1882, for the amount of $23.00 payable to Endicott Peabody. The draft is signed by Peabody and is stamped twice in red ink. The draft also bears an uncancelled 2 cent postage stamp. Endicott Peabody (1857-1944) was an Episcopal clergyman who was born in Salem, Massachusetts and attended the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He founded Groton School for Boys (now known as Groton School) in Groton, Massachusetts, where he served as headmaster for future president Franklin D. Roosevelt. He later officiated at Roosevelt's marriage to Eleanor Roosevelt. After his first semester at the Episcopal Divinity School, Peabody was invited to take charge of an Episcopal congregation in Tombstone. Arriving in Tombstone in January 1882, Peabody built up the congregation and led the efforts to build a new Episcopal church. Due to homesickness, he left Tombstone after six months. This is a scarce document that highlights an important aspect of Tombstone history. 2) A Pima County Bank (Tucson) draft, 7" x 2.75", unnumbered, dated March 3, 1882, for the amount of $200.00 payable to A. L. Stahl. The check is signed for John H. Galey, and is stamped in red ink. John H. Galey (1840-1918) was a Pennsylvania oilman who organized the Texas Mining and Smelting Company and financed silver mine claims in what became Galeyville in 1881. Galeyville did not last long, however; it was a ghost town by 1883. This is a rare document. Both drafts have small pinholes, but otherwise are in good condition.
