Description

Pima County, Arizona: Rare Handwritten Arrest Warrant. A rare handwritten warrant, 7.5" x 12.5", dated November 21, 1879, for the arrest of Frank Stilwell to "be held to answer upon a charge of Murder of J. V. Houton near Charleston...on or about the 8th day of November AD 1879." The warrant was written and signed by Mike Gray, Justice of the Peace, Justice Court of the 17th Precinct, Pima County, Arizona Territory.

Born in Iowa, Frank Stilwell (1856-1882) arrived in Arizona Territory in 1877. He was involved in several business ventures and got into trouble with the law on several occasions. In 1879 he, along with James Cassidy, named in this warrant, were accused of beating John Van Houten to death with a rock over a mining claim. Both Stilwell and Cassidy were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Stilwell was suspected of the murder of Morgan Earp in 1882 and, as a result, was killed by Wyatt Earp on March 20, 1882. Michael "Mike" Gray (1827-1906) was born in Tennessee and moved to Tombstone in 1879, where he served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors and as justice of the peace. He also was involved in several business ventures.

Handwritten arrest warrants such as this are scarce in today's market. The document has three horizontal folds, but otherwise it is in very good condition.
