Description

"Out Into Space": Complete Set of Fifty Brooke Bond Tea Tobacco Cards from 1958 ("Issued In"), in Archival Binder Sleeves. A set of interesting color cards, double-sided and 1.5" x 2.625" in size, originally issued (1956) more than a year before Sputnik so they concentrate on astronomy, endorsed by Dr. A. Hunter, Secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society. It begins with the Sun, the Moon, and the planets, then sections on Zodiacal signs, principal constellations, and ends with cards dealing with radio telescopes and star composition. The Brooke Bond Tea Company was founded in 1869 by Arthur Brooke in Manchester, England. The company grew steadily, becoming a well-known tea brand in the UK. In 1954, Brooke Bond began including collectible cards in their tea packets as a marketing strategy to encourage brand loyalty. The first series was titled "British Birds"; this present series was their third-ever set. The legacy of Brooke Bond tea cards continues as they remain a popular item among collectors. Very fine.
