Description
Early Lunar Photography: "Full Moon" circa 1864 by Lewis M. Rutherfurd, a Magic Lantern Glass Slide from T. W. Ingersoll, Issued Late 1800s. A standard 4" x 3" glass slide with a typed caption attached: "B. Full Moon Photographed by Prof. Rutherford [sic]. Negatives made a month apart." The earliest known description of a magic lantern comes in 1659 from a manuscript by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, magic lanterns were a common form of entertainment, predating the development of cinema. The magic lantern had a significant impact on visual entertainment and education, serving as a precursor to modern projection technologies and contributing to the development of cinema and animation.Lewis Morris Rutherfurd was a significant figure in the field of astrophotography during the 19th century. Though he was initially trained as a lawyer, his interest in astronomy and photography led him to contribute significantly to the advancement of astrophotography. Rutherfurd designed and built specialized photographic equipment suitable for capturing images of celestial bodies. His modifications to telescope designs allowed for better photographic captures. He is often credited with the creation of the first telescope designed explicitly for astrophotography. Rutherfurd developed techniques to photograph the moon and stars with better clarity and detail than had been achieved previously. His work in developing processes for photographing celestial objects paved the way for subsequent advancements in astrophotography. His collection of photographic plates represented one of the earliest systematic attempts to photograph the night sky, and these plates provided a wealth of information to astronomers of his time. Rutherfurd helped push the boundaries of what was possible in terms of photographing the moon, thereby contributing to a better understanding of our celestial neighbor. His work in lunar photography and other areas of astrophotography continues to be recognized for its pioneering nature and its impact on the field of astronomy.
A beautiful image reminiscent of those taken by the Apollo astronauts on their journeys to and from the moon. Very good.
