Description

"Aviation": Complete Set of Fifty Colorful Wills's Cigarette Tobacco Cards from 1910, in Archival Binder Sleeves. A fascinating set of colorful cards tracing the early history of Aviation from Frenchman Montgolfier's Balloon in 1783 to the First Lady Aviator, Madame the Baroness Delaroche, in 1909. Each is double-sided and 1.375" x 2.625" in size. They were issued by W.D.& H.O Wills which was a British tobacco importer and cigarette manufacturer formed in Bristol, England in 1786, a founding company of The Imperial Tobacco Company. Numbers 1 through 25 are Lighter than Air Airships; numbers 26 through 50 are Heavier than Air Aeroplanes. Interestingly, the Wright Bros.' Biplane makes its appearance at number 35. The period from the 1890s to the 1910s is often considered the Golden Age of Tobacco Cards. During this time, a wide variety of themes were featured on the cards, including athletes, actors, animals, military heroes, and more. Very fine.
