Description

Alan Shepard Signed Vanguard 1 Launch Cover. A cacheted, unaddressed philatelic cover cancelled March 17, 1958, at Port Canaveral. Signed in black felt tip: "Alan Shepard". It bears two images and the text: "Vanguard I United States Artificial Earth Satellite. Today, March 17, 1958 the United States Successfully fired our first Vanguard Satellite into space projected by a 72 foot Vanguard 3 stage rocket." This was the fourth artificial Earth orbital satellite ever launched (America's second) and the first to be solar powered. Interestingly, it is still in orbit though it quit transmitting in 1964. A rare cover even without the autograph. Excellent.
