Apollo 16 Flown Georgia Flag Directly from the John W. Young
Collection, with Letter of Certification. A 6.125" x 4.25"
cloth Georgia state flag that was carried aboard Apollo 16 on its
mission to the moon in April 1972. This is the version of the
Georgia flag from the 1956 to 2001 era which incorporates the
Confederate Battle Flag. It has since been updated. Young spent
part of his childhood in Georgia and graduated from Georgia Tech.
Light creasing. Very fine.Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the flag of the STATE of GEORGIA that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label, #1733206, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
