Description

Ex. John Young

Apollo 16 Flown Larger-Size American Flag from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. An 11.75" x 7.75" cloth U.S. flag that flew aboard the Apollo 16 Command Module Casper to the moon, April 16-27, 1972, with crewmembers John Young, Ken Mattingly, and Charlie Duke. Flown flags of this size are rarer than the 6" x 4" versions and eminently more displayable, making them very desirable to collectors. Light folds. Very fine.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the large size (approximate 8" x 12") flag of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label attached, #1733200, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
