Description

Ex. John Young

Apollo 10 Flown Embroidered Mission Insignia "Grumman" Crew Patch Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. This 4" x 4" shield-shaped patch flew with crewmembers Stafford, Young, and Cernan aboard the Apollo 10 mission to the moon, May 18-26, 1969. The design for this insignia shows a large, three-dimensional "X" sitting on the moon with a command module orbiting as a lunar module flies up to it from its pass over the lunar surface. Earth is visible in the background. Inside a medium blue border is "APOLLO" at top and the crew surnames below. It is bordered in gold thread. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the Apollo 10 'Grumman' Embroidered Mission patch that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 10 mission May 18-26, 1969. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since the mission. The protective package holding this patch is sealed with a holographic tamper-proof label, #1745094, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
