A 1" diameter two-sided medal with jump ring contained in the original box with a detailed history of the medal. The obverse has a likeness of the Blessed Virgin with "Our Lady of Loretto" above and a very appropriate "Protect My Flight" below. The reverse depicts an airplane with "Patroness of Aviators & Air Travelers" around with the Sterling and ©1958 hallmarks. The signed COA from Jim McDivitt reads, in full: "This 1" sterling silver medallion of Our Lady of Loretto, Patroness of Aviators and Air Travelers, with the front showing Our Lady of Loretto's face with "Protect My Flight" and the back showing an airliner, was flown aboard Apollo 9 in Earth orbit, 3-13 March 1969, and is from my personal collection. In original box, with story of Our Lady of Loretto and the development and dedication of this medallion." Excellent.

It was felt that a medal was needed for air travelers similar to the St. Christopher medal for surface travelers. In 1920, Pope Benedict XV declared "Our Lady of Loretto the Chief Patroness before God of air travelers" The medal was officially dedicated in 1959.
