Description

Apollo 13 Flown Mission Insignia Patch with Typed Letter Signed from Commander James A. Lovell. A 4" embroidered Apollo 13 insignia patch that flew aboard the historic mission. It is affixed to an 8" x 10.5" typed letter signed by Commander James Lovell addressed to Mr. Lawrence A. Pavlinski of the U.S. Department of Transportation that states: "Dear Larry: One of these days I am going to be long enough in Washington to come over and see you. That will be the day when I can see over the top of my desk and I finally hear no more about the problems of Apollo 13. Enclosed please find a patch of Apollo 13. This patch was flown onboard the spacecraft. Hope to see you soon." It is signed at close: "Jim". This patch, explicitly stated by Lovell to have been flown onboard the Apollo 13 spacecraft, represents one of the most iconic and dramatic missions in NASA history, the "successful failure" that safely returned its crew following an oxygen tank explosion en route to the Moon. The letter is dated May 26, 1970, only a little over a month after the perilous flight. A great flown relic with a personal connection that was retained and gifted by the mission Commander. Age related toning to the letter, overall fine.
