Description

Apollo 13 Flown President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports Patch Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell, with Signed LOA. This 3" embroidered patch has the presidential seal in red, white, blue, and gold thread against a blue background with white lettering. In June 1967, President Johnson appointed Lovell as his consultant for physical fitness and sports. President Nixon, in 1970, assigned Lovell the additional responsibility of Chairman of the Council. Lovell served in these roles until resigning in 1978, but continued to be active in the Council's activities. Included with this lot is the original storage bag from Captain Lovell on which he has written: "PCPFS Patches flown on Apollo 13. 5 patches". This would seem to indicate that this is the last one he will be offering. A much rarer item than the flown mission insignia patches. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Lovell on his company letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports Embroidered Patch was on board the Apollo 13 spacecraft. Apollo 13 perilous flight took off on April 11 and returned safely on April 17, 1970. This patch was from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the mission."
