Description

Apollo 14 Flown American Flag on Crew-Signed Presentation Certificate to University of Texas Legend Rooster Andrews. A 5.75" x 3.875" silk U.S. flag mounted to a 10" x 12" certificate bearing the Apollo 14 mission insignia and signed as follows: "Alan Shepard/ Best Wishes To Rooster From Apollo 14", "Stuart A Roosa", and "Ed Mitchell". This is, unusually, the first time Heritage has offered one of this type of presentation for Apollo 14. All the writing is uniformly faded but quite visible; the flag has some glue bleedthrough but is bright and crisp, formerly matted and framed. Very fine.

William Edward "Rooster" Andrews was a notable figure at the University of Texas, serving as a team manager, kicker, and halfback during the 1940s. Standing just 4 feet 11 inches tall, he became a beloved character in Longhorn sports, known for his spirited personality and contributions to the team, including drop-kicking extra points in critical games. After graduating in 1946, he opened a successful sporting goods store and is credited with designing the iconic Longhorn logo for the football helmet, which significantly boosted UT's brand recognition. Rooster Andrews passed away on January 21, 2008, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most cherished figures in Texas athletics history. He was an avid fan of the Space program and became friends with the astronauts who often presented him with flown items to display in his store (thus the fading on the signatures). From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
