Description

NERVA Nuclear Rocket Engine Contractor's Model. A magnificent metal model, 10.5" tall on a 5" wooden base of the Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application. The project was a cooperative effort between NASA and the Atomic Energy Commission to develop a nuclear thermal propulsion rocket that would be viable for space exploration, particularly a manned journey to Mars. Developed by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, Westinghouse, Aerojet, and others. Despite backing by von Braun and others for a Mars mission using Nerva, it lost out in the space funding cuts of the 1970s. Interesting to wonder what might have been. Extremely rare, only a handful of these were ever made. Light age-related wear, missing original nameplate. Overall fine.
