Description

Northrop ASN-50 Inertial Navigation System Gyroscope Unit. Measuring 15" x 6.75" x 7" here is a rare and historically significant example of Cold War-era aerospace engineering. This gyroscopic unit was a key component of the Northrop ASN-50 Inertial Navigation System (INS). The unit features three external multi-pin connectors (J361-J363), a drift bias potentiometer, and factory calibration labels. Exterior stenciling includes detailed installation instructions and cautionary warnings such as "DO NOT HANDLE GYRO UNTIL 30 MINUTES AFTER SHUTDOWN"-a reference to the high-speed mechanical gyros inside. The interior contains dual-axis gyroscopic mechanisms and precision-wrapped wiring harnesses, all secured within a ruggedized aluminum chassis designed to endure extreme flight conditions. A vintage elapsed-time meter, calibration markings, and directional alignment label further highlight its operational use. On the top of the case is a stamped date of January 19, 1968 which is contemporaneous with the U.S. Navy's A-6 Intruder program and overlapping with the peak of the Apollo space program. An outstanding acquisition for any aviation or military collection. Very fine.
