Description
Albert H. "Al" Crews NASA Flight Jacket with Name Patch and Insignia, Directly from His Estate. An olive-green nylon flight jacket featuring a full front zipper, knit cuffs and waistband, two large flap front pockets, and pen/pencil sleeve pocket on the left arm. Manufacturer's interior label reads:"JACKET, FLYER'S, MEN'S SUMMERSIZE: LARGE (42-44)/CARTER INDUSTRIES, INC." Embroidered NASA "meatball" insignia patch on right chest, and blue-and-white NASA wings name patch on left chest reading: "AL CREWS." Left shoulder bears a large embroidered U.S. flag patch, the standard placement for NASA flight and test-crew garments. Crews was a career Air Force pilot and graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School, he was selected on April 20, 1962 for the second group of X-20 Dyna-Soar astronauts, replacing Neil Armstrong, who had transferred to NASA's astronaut corps. After the Dyna-Soar program was cancelled in 1963, Crews continued his spaceflight career as one of the first astronauts chosen for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) program in 1965. When that program ended in 1969, he transferred to NASA's Flight Crew Directorate at the Johnson Space Center. Please see other material from the Crews estate in this auction. Very fine.
At NASA, Crews became one of the agency's most versatile research pilots, flying the "Super Guppy" heavy-lift transport, the WB-57F atmospheric research aircraft, and the OV-095 SAIL Shuttle simulator. He contributed data and operational experience that influenced the development of the Apollo, Space Shuttle, and later International Space Station programs. Even after retiring at age 65, he continued humanitarian flying through Angel Flight, transporting patients for medical care.
