Apollo 12 Lunar Module Flown Grumman Tie Pin Originally from the
Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Richard
Gordon. A gold-colored 17mm diameter pin with an enameled U.S.
flag against a lunar surface background on the front. The reverse
features the text: "Flown To The Moon By An Intrepid Crew/ Apollo
XII/ November 1969" above a Navy Pilot's insignia, with "Conrad -
Gordon - Bean" beneath. The callsign for the Apollo 12 Lunar Module
LM-6 was Intrepid and the Navy Wing pays honor to the three
Naval pilots aboard the mission. There were only fifty of these
pins that spent more than thirty-one hours on the lunar surface
from November 19 to 20, 1969. Their history is documented in the
book, Chariots for Apollo, by Charles Pellegrino (New York:
Avon Books, 1999, page 233): "Tommy Attridge had sent fifty gold
pins along with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean. They were round, like
the moon, and heavily cratered, with the Stars and Stripes (the
wrong number of stripes) in the foreground. On their backs were
engraved the words FLOWN TO THE MOON BY AN INTREPID CREW."
