Description

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed as Governor. One page, 8" x 10.5". Albany, New York; December 10, 1900. A letter to D. LeRoy Dresser declining to write a letter of recommendation: "...I do not know Kiernan personally, so that a letter from me to Devery or any one else would ne in the shape of asking a favor, and to do that means that I should be expected to reciprocate. I have steadfastly refused to write for any policeman [policeman is written holographically over the word "man", which has been crossed out] save to tell my personal experiences, and that is to write simply such a letter as a Colonel writes about a man of his regiment who wishes promotion..." Signed in full, "Theodore Roosevelt." From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Flattened folds and gently toned. A single emendation in Roosevelt's hand as noted above. Previous collector's notation in pencil on verso. Uneven toning and light wear and soiling on verso.
