Description

James Garfield Signature as President. 3.75" x 2.25". A dated signature, "James A. Garfield / May 6, 1881" on a Masonic card reading "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES" (Latin for, "In this sign you will conquer"). On verso is written in pencil "Compliment" in an unknown hand above the name "James King" which is stamped. Accompanied by a cabinet card photograph (4.2" x 6.5") of Garfield by A. Bogardus, New York.

Autographs of Garfield as president are rare due to the fact that he served only from March 1881 until he was shot on July 18, 1881; and later dying from his wounds on September 19, 1881.

Condition: Stray foxing, including a spot between Garfield's first name and middle initial; and slight mat burn. Mounting remnants on verso. The cabinet card has light soiling throughout and two small mounting remnants at top on verso.
