William Henry Harrison Scarce Autograph Letter Signed as President-Elect. One-page, 7.25" x 9.25" (sight) dated January 20, 1841, from North Bend, Indiana, to Lewis J. Cist, Cincinnati, Ohio. In full:"Sir,
I comply with your request by acknowledging the receipt of your favor of the 8th Inst.
& am with great Respect

W. H. Harrison"
Harrison, elected president of the United States the previous November, writes to Lewis Jacob Cist (1818-1885) a Cincinnati poet and writer of music. During his lifetime Cist assembled one of the largest and well-known autograph collections in the United States. He was also an avid collector of portraits of notable people. In this letter Harrison may be responding to Cist's request for an autograph of the new President-elect. Cist published a book of his poetry, Trifles in Verse: A Collection of Fugitive Poems.
Letters by Harrison as president-elect and president are quite rare. Harrison lived only a month after his inauguration. The only Harrison letter as president-elect that we can recall appearing on the market was in Christie's Charles E. Sigety sale in June 2015, which sold for $7,500.
Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds and the ink has bled through to the verso. Otherwise the letter and engraving are in good condition. Matted with an engraving of Harrison based on a painting by Chappel, to an overall size of 18" x 14".
