Description

William McKinley Carte de Visite. The twenty-fifth president is seen in this vignette portrait bust, likely taken when he was a young lieutenant during the Civil War. A pencil notation on the verso identifies this as "Will McKinley." Areas of light foxing.

McKinley was 18 years old when he enlisted in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Regiment as a private in June 1861. He participated in the Battle of Antietam and served as a 2nd Lieutenant on the staff of fellow president, Rutherford B. Hayes. He mustered out of service on July 26, 1865, as a brevet major.
