Description
Photograph: Union General Alexander Hays and Staff. 8" x 6.75". Hays (1819-1864) is seen with members of his staff and the 17th Maine Regimental Band. In the background are two log cabins. Each person appearing in the photograph has been identified below. Mounted to an overall size of 12" x 10". Mount is moderately foxed with a 1.5" tear from the upper edge.Hays served in the Mexican War and distinguished himself in an engagement near Atlico. After resigning from the army, he moved to the gold fields in California, but reentered army service at the beginning of the Civil War as colonel of the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He fought in the battles of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Savage's Station, and Malvern Hill and was wounded in the leg leading a charge at Second Manassas. During the Battle of Gettysburg, his Third Division defended the right of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge and held firm in the repulse of the Confederate attack on July 3, 1863. Hays was killed in action during the Overland Campaign after being struck in the head by a MiniƩ ball. One of his aides reported that he was shot as he strained his head to drink from his canteen, which was why he was hit directly in the temple. His body was recovered and sent to the rear lines for transport home. During a campaign stop in Pittsburgh during Ulysses S. Grant's campaign for the presidency, he visited Hays's grave and openly wept.
