William McKinley Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", on Head-Quarters, First Division First Army Corps letterhead, Camp Stoneman [Washington, D.C.], June 1, 1865. Addressed to the commanding officer of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, ordering the release of Private H.H. Adriance[?] "who remained absent from his Regiment two days over his leave and is now reported a deserter." The soldier in question, who was under arrest, had recently "furnished satisfactory evidence that his absence was unavoidable." The future president signs here as a captain and acting assistant adjutant general. Docketing on the verso. Dampstaining along the folds and left edge. Separation along the folds has been archivally repaired on the verso.
